As digital dentistry continues to evolve, clinical workflows are becoming increasingly data-driven, from CBCT and intraoral scanning to CAD/CAM, 3D printing, and guided implant surgery.
In full-arch implant rehabilitation, one of the most critical datasets is implant position.
No matter how precise the design or how efficient the manufacturing process may be, any inaccuracy in implant position can ultimately affect passive fit, screw stability, prosthesis longevity, and long-term maintenance cost. This becomes especially important in All-on-4 and All-on-X full-arch cases, where multiple implants support a single prosthesis and even small discrepancies may be amplified.
That is why I began integrating photogrammetry into my clinical workflow.
Photogrammetry is not a new technology. It has long been used in surveying, aerospace, and automotive manufacturing. Its core principle is to calculate the exact three-dimensional spatial relationship of an object through multiple reference markers. This differs fundamentally from the logic of intraoral scanning (IOS), which mainly relies on surface geometry for alignment and stitching.
For me, PIC is not meant to replace intraoral scanning. Instead, it fills another critical gap in the digital workflow. Intraoral scanning is responsible for capturing soft tissue, teeth, and bite registration information, while PIC Photogrammetry focuses on implant position record. These datasets can then be integrated in CAD software, allowing each technology to do what it does best.
Beyond accuracy, what I value even more is the clinical flexibility offered by PIC Portable. For clinicians who deliver full-arch treatment across different clinics, the ability to capture reliable data quickly in different environments, without depending on a fixed room or complex setup, is what truly allows the technology to fit naturally into real-world practice.
In digital full-arch rehabilitation, the real goal is not simply speed. It is predictability. When the data becomes more reliable, the outcome becomes more predictable. To me, PIC is one more essential piece that makes the digital workflow more complete.
